New culture shipping vessels: after the screw-capped tubes we use for shipping were discontinued we opted for glass vials instead - which will reduce our single-use plastic usage.
The photo is of some happy Chlamydomonas cultures currently heading to Poland 🧪

Introducing CCAP 88/8 Volvox aureus

Collected from a pond at Glasgow Botanic Gardens, this lovely green algae forms spherical colonies. We lost our last strain of Volvox several years ago so it is lovely to have it back in the Collection!

CCAP was visited today by Thibaut Pollina, the inventor of the #PlanktoScope, a modular, open-source platform for #plankton imaging. It allows high-throughput quantitative #imaging of samples in the lab or in the field. Fascinating to have a look at it and see what it can do!

Yesterday was International Microorganism Day! A day late, but we've picked a lovely microalga:
Spirogyra, a filamentous green microalga, forms beautiful patterns when grown on agar. Left is CCAP 678/9 S. mirabilis, and right is CCAP 678/3 S. varians. Fascinating to see the difference in structure.
