We aim to translate research into the clinic. Together we are making a real-life impact on people living with blood cancers and disorders.
Blood cancer patients faced higher COVID-19 mortality, but shielding & vaccines saved lives. Some subgroups need better protection strategies for future pandemics

Vaccination helped:
There was a clear benefit overall, but limited effect in CLL & MCL patients. The findings suggest tailored strategies for vulnerable groups that are important beyond COVID-19.

Shielding mattered:
Early excess deaths in patients with MBL (premalignancy) occurred because they weren’t advised to shield initially - unlike those with malignancies. This showcases a gap in healthcare-related policy.

Mortality risk:
Haematology patients: 2.59% COVID-19 deaths
General population: 1.65%
Risks were higher in men, older age, and those with co-morbidities.

Survival in people with myeloma nearly doubled since 2005
People diagnosed with multiple myeloma – one of the most common forms of blood cancer – are now living nearly twice as long on average as they were in 2005, according to a new study.

The findings have been published during Blood Cancer Awareness Month. Myeloma affects around 6,300 people in the UK every year, making up around 2% of all cancer cases. Currently there is no cure, but treatment can help to manage symptoms and extend life

This research was led by our leaders in Health Sciences
& funded by @cancerresearchuk.org
and @bloodcanceruk.bsky.social

The study found that median survival for people with myeloma rose from 2.4 years in 2005 to 4.5 years in 2019

Generation Research Founder Jillian Barlow answered the questions:

❔ What do we mean by clinical research?
❔How can we build better research ecosystems & what does "better" mean?
❔How do we solve inequity in healthcare by supporting biomedical scientists from diverse backgrounds?

...through initaitives such as Active Together (Liam Humphreys), Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial (with Matthew Callister) and Yorkshire Enhanced Stop Smoking Study

This is all dependent on innovative regional clinical research

But who are our future clinical researchers?
