The specifics are "Yes, if you only use detergent in the main cycle, a given manufacturer's packs are better than their powder" (see 10:45 in link), BUT (1) this isn't true if you use pre-wash, (packs don't prewash) (2) this isn't true across different manufacturers.

1. You don't need fancy detergents, use powder or gel instead. They work fine.
2. Put some detergent in both the normal detergent door AND some next to it (in the "pre-wash", failing that, just throw some in before closing.
3. Run your sink until you get HOT water, then start the dishwasher.
