Escaping slaves used to throw balls of fried cornmeal out to distract the hounds from tracking them. The hounds would stop barking and tracking thanks to the cornmeal which later adopted the name “hush puppies”. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Thomas L. Jennings made history in 1821 as the first Black person to receive a U.S. patent for his novel dry-cleaning method. A successful businessman, he used his wealth to free enslaved family members and fund abolitionist efforts, leaving a lasting legacy. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Donnie Cochran 🛫
Navy naval aviator and was the first Black American aviator to be selected to the Flight Demonstration Squadron Blue Angels in 1986. Cochran later assumed command of the Blue Angels in 1994. He is a 2022 inductee to the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Celebrating Sarah Boone (1832-1904)
Sarah Boone, born into slavery in 1832, invented an improved ironing board, streamlining the ironing process for women's clothing.
Her patented design, awarded in 1892, made her one of the first African American women to receive a patent.

Do you know Bessie Coleman? She was the first Black woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1921 when U.S. flight schools refused her entry. She learned to fly in France and became a famous stunt pilot! ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿🛬

In 1849, to escape 33 years of his life as a slave, Henry "Box" Brown shipped himself in a cargo box from Richmond, Virginia, to the abolitionist zone in Philadelphia.
Henry Brown completed the 350-mile journey, barely breathing through the air holes he pierced in his 60-centimeter-wide cargo box!
