I'm not sure when or why earnestness became cringe, but I think for the most part, we're worse off for it because it encourages people to distance themselves from each other and the things they care about. And that's a lonely way to exist.

A while back, someone submitted the secret "Earnestness is overrated." I didn't like it, but out of curiosity, I tried using it as a suggestion in a rehearsal, and sure enough, it broke the vibe of the show. It's really, really hard to take that position and still be vulnerable and invested.
