As a widow, I only get $250k. My husband and I bought our home for less than $200k and it’s now worth about $800k. It’s hurting me. I would lose massively if I sold, so I will stay in a home too large for me until I can no longer.

The ironic thing is, my special needs adult son, who’s on Medicaid and whose day program is funded by Medicaid, actually volunteers with meals on wheels. So, Republicans want him to work, but then take away the program he works with.

My mother continued for the rest of her life to be very frugal with her money, even when it wasn’t necessary. She and her family were deeply affected as they were poor.

As someone who lost my husband when he was 51 and my sister when she was 52, I know this all too well. Don’t take a moment for granted and tell the people you love how much they are loved. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

And many of us never learned this part of our history in school. I was first made aware of Japanese internment camps when my daughter was doing a book report in elementary school. It was a shameful time, and I can see it repeating.

I worry about my friends left there and the impact on their lives. They were very supportive to me when my husband passed allowing me to work M-F 9-2 because I had 3 kids, but they’ve long since lost their humanity.
