For fathers, uncles, and brothers of someone with a severe learning disability, the emotional toll can be especially heavy. The love is deep, but so is the pressure. The quiet moments of worry. The feeling that you have to be the strong one — always. You don’t have to carry it alone.
November 10, 2025 at 1:00 PM
The service is open to parents, carers, siblings or close relatives of children, young people and adults with severe learning disabilities who display behaviour that challenges. Because sometimes, talking to someone who truly gets it makes all the difference.

It's vital that family carers have a route to challenge their relative’s care support if they don't feel that they're in their best interest/are too restrictive. Individuals with severe learning disabilities whose behaviours challenge are at greater risk of isolation, restrictive practices & abuse.

(3/5) Powerful campaigning from people with learning disabilities, autistic people, families and charities has got us to this point and now people’s voices are needed more than ever.

(2/5) Without sufficient community support, the changes in the Mental Health Bill that will prevent people with learning disabilities and autistic people from being detained in hospital when they do not have a mental health condition will not be enacted.

Alongside other organisations and campaigners, we’ve written to Health Secretary Wes Streeting calling on him to address the falling numbers of Learning Disability Nurses, so that people with learning disabilities can continue to access this essential support – read our joint letter below.

The recent LeDeR report showed that Learning Disability Nurses help to tackle the unacceptable health inequalities that people with learning disabilities continue to face.
But their numbers have fallen significantly over the last 15 years, and the university courses that train them are closing.

(2/3) "When families ask for support, that is exactly what they should get. We urge the government to take forward these proposals and ensure that the experiences of children with severe learning disabilities and the voices of family carers continue to be heard as reforms are implemented."
