I check in to BlueSky after a week off and it's still primarily Gulf chatter

Will check back in another week

Although political name changes are an annoyance, and politically driven map edits/reverses are too, I do think there's an okay logic in using América (with accent) that many countries (like those in OAS) say is the name of the vast region, as a name for the Gulf.

Perhaps "Gulf of the Américas"

As discussion boils about #googlemaps and #gulf of Mexico/América, I want to share something I wrote before about Unbundling Google Maps.

Google Maps includes many pieces like search, places, street view... My post talks alternatives for each.

🗺️📊 Curious about the impact of OpenStreetMap usage?

We selected some metrics on #ohsome tools and the impact of #OpenStreetMap (#OSM) in 2024.
From building data coverage to the number of API requests, these figures showcase the scale of OSM use and the analytics capabilities of ohsome.

I love sunny winter days. This was last week. Today rainy and grim.

Some days I think I should set up a screen in my house with a grid of webcams so I can wake up and see where near me has the best weather, as if I am running surveillance in a casino.

Does anyone know if there is open data lidar for areas in the Amazon and Guatemala?

I want to check firsthand how known ruins look in this format, as well as see how algorithms might work to look for anomalies suggesting a human built structure

I need to really check out Lonboard more! Good project using it here with cloud data
Understanding air quality requires data, tooling, and that people actually know how to understand and use them both. Proud that we were able to support @openaq.org and @developmentseed.org to put modern data tooling to work for mobile air quality datasets.

Working with large datasets can be challenging. We collaborated with @developmentseed.org to develop new functionality to visualize and analyze large datasets like mobile air quality measurements with Lonboard, an open-source Python library for Jupyter notebooks. openaq.medium.com/exploring-mo...

My latest piece on Substack, thinking about the challenge of synchronizing the real world and the map.

Many things that never get mapped end up with no evidence of having ever existed!

This is one form of self-verification, and we especially encourage official organizations and brands to do this! Examples include @npr.org @react.dev @duolingobrasil.com.br.

Something I think about recently is a geospatial API aggregator.

I saw some tool that allows you to use dozens of APais across the web, like flight and travel APIs, without getting a key for each. For data exploration.

For geo, it's a little bit like STAC.

When foggy, go up.

I miss the Rockies for being just so sunny, but nice in the Alps that the sun is reachable in a few minutes, and you can see this beautiful sea of clouds.

So far Bluesky is like LinkedIn (same geo content I think, that's a good thing) minus work achievement announcements, but with politics and a UI worse than X

But nice to see some geospatial chatter alive and well
