Countries don’t maximize profit - they maximize growth and happiness of their citizens. They’re obligated to care about citizens even at a loss. Your stakeholders are your citizens not donors.

One thing I remember is thinking that there was no way OJ was guilty because it was inconceivable to my young self that someone could murder their kids mother while those kids were home.
