I am currently in the low point of this graph and I am going BUGFUCK CRAZY. Currently researching, critiquing, observing, and learning to update my style. Unfortunately, when your style is the thing in flux, EVERYTHING YOU MAKE SUCKS (to you).

But I'm confident I'll come out stronger. Just. UGH.
A popular graph, where the Y axis is labeled "Ability" and the X axis is labeled "Time." This graph shows the inverse relation between skill at making art, and skill at seeing or evaluating art. When one is high, the other is low, and when is low, the other is high. Both improve over time, but it's rare you're ever good at the same time. When Skill at Making Art is on top, it's labeled "Perceived Skill" with the note, "Wow, my art is getting really good!" When Ability to See is on top, it's labeled "Perceived Lack of Skill" with the note, "Ugh, I can't draw anymore!" Notes on the graph add that your art seems to get less bad, and then really awesome, because your ability to see is plateauing, when the "art skill" is sloping sharply upward. When your art skill is the one plateauing, but your ability to see and observe is improving past it, the graph notes, "Actual skill is steady, but your art seems steadily WORSE. It's just your ability to perceive art getting better, so you can criticize your own art better!" Finally, the big explanatory paragraph says: Art is a cycle. Sometimes you draw really well, then sometimes you feel like you can't draw at all. In reality, you are always slowly improving. It's just a cycle of seeing VS drawing that makes you think you are doing worse. Understanding how this works can help an artist power through art blocks (for you are simply improving your ability to SEE), and not get too cocky during art highs!

My name is Caytlin Vilbrandt and I draw the comic #Tamberlane! I like to draw things with themes of animals, nature, and emotion.

I'm in the middle of a long-term journey to really level up in color, light, value, and focus, exploring mediums, and leveling up my art!
