I agree. You're not redeeming him, I'm talking about the tendency for people to adhere to false hope that these people are "seeing the light". They're not. They're seeing a sinking ship and they don't want to go down with it. And yes, by all means let them fight.

What do you do when people confuse hardboiled for noir? E.g. calling Marlowe stuff noir... Ignore them? Educate them? Throttle them? Worse when something is marketed as "noir" but there's a happy ending and the main guy wins. Woolrich would hiss.

Yes, of course. Probably no coincidence that I also consider that particular segment, the Beethoven, to be the least artistic of the whole film, with its cloying cutie pies. Nowhere near the level of the Tchaikovsky or Mussorgsky segments.
