To be fair, the books noticeably deteriorate after the first 5, so the quality of the show going up might hit the quality of the source material going down.

I remember reading an interview with late-life HM, when he was quite deaf, & interviewer noted that he misinterpreted every anodyne interaction (waitress bringing coffee, etc) as being massively sexually loaded, and began to wonder whether his whole vibe was just him misunderstanding everything.

From memory that changes as it goes on--more and more of the cluelessness and out-of-touchness of the aristocrats shows as the Habsburg Empire falls apart. But I did last read it 25 years ago, so that memory is VAGUE.
