100% agree with this - as an avid ff reader, one of the comforts of reading it is that there are already characters/a world that i know and love, and so i don't have to put as much energy and effort into reading. to strip them and make them 'original works' feels disingenuous
I’m not a fan of this uptick in retooling fanfiction for publishing. Fanfic relies on an IP foundation and exists in conversation with other fics and readers. Stripped of that, what’s often left are hollow worlds and characters that lack the depth to fully interact with their settings.
