The Cat Sage
@catsandstrategy.bsky.social
Strategist, historian, writer, and voracious reader of science fiction and fantasy. My wife and I have had five cats together that we spoil outrageously. He/him.
When it comes to time travelers we’re clearly not sending our best.

At one point he tries to explain to his brother and he just… can’t. The story would sound too crazy. 99.99% of the people in the story would call him a madman. The other 0.01% would try to kill him for knowing too much. It fits neatly into the storytelling device of thus being a secret history.

No elephants, but some very cool giraffes, rhinos, giant tortoises, and a Sumatran tiger.

Reaper Man’s a great one. Good old Bill Door! I think I read Soul Music first and then had to go back for that one.

Work all week and want to do something fun on the weekend? Better plan an extra hour coming and going. And it might actually be bearable if the construction ever seemed to make any tangible progress but nothing ever seems to change.

That survey had better have an option for “we thought it was already 120 km/hr” or “don’t lower the speed limit to 120/ km/hr.”

I believe it was Regulus Augustulus, which definitely wasn’t a case where anything bad happened.

Woman who got banned from an island almost entirely populated by the descendants of criminals says what?

One of the first times my wife and I made a stir fry together we used a recipe that instructed us to add hot peppers flakes to heated oil. We promptly tear-gassed ourselves and our apartment did NOT have the ventilation to handle it. Nearly 20 years ago and the memory is still fresh.

I went into P5 almost completely blind immediately after reading the original Arsene Lupin novels, with the only thing I knew being that it was about a group calling themselves Phantom Thieves. I named the protagonist Lupin, which turned out to be pretty funny when his persona showed up.

I collected studies on 8 subject areas, read them, and built a database of summaries. My replacement fed the studies through AI to produce summaries because they didn’t understand that part of the point was becoming a well read expert who could use that knowledge to evaluate new proposals.

Yep, and half the point of taking notes is so that your brain has to process the information so it will take up residence there. Farming that job out to an AI will produce a written product but not help you remember at all. At my last job one of my tasks was an ongoing literature review.

When I bought a e-book copy I let it sit on my Kindle until I went somewhere where there were no forests for hundreds of miles. In retrospect this was a good decision, which I followed up by moving to a place famous for being haunted.
