Truly! Putting together a good lecture—one with substance (but not overwhelm), interactive elements, and a structure that’s easy for students to follow—and delivering it well requires a host of difficult skills.

Yes!! I think people dislike having to sit quietly and do nothing else, but goddamn if podcasts (not to mention multi-hour video essays on Youtube) don’t debunk the idea that lectures themselves are the problem.

I think maybe the intuition is that undeserved *rewards* are wrong to give. So, undeserved goods are good to give as long as they’re not given as rewards.
