They seem to admit even on a longer bridge E-50 is likely overkill but went with it anyways

I was asked to take a look at Santa Cruz Branch Line budget and find some talking points for advocates to get the cost lower.
Right off the bat 684M for professional services on a 22 mile line is insane.

Goleta Layver continues to be delayed, they had to move the location a while back and its not advanced significantly
Ortega siding is a small siding north Carpinteria which replaced the plans to double track though town
Finally a bridge west of Lompoc crossing Santa Ynez River

Yes, this route is on the list to get "BRT" by 2040 based on a 2016 plan
So far of the 12 major corridors:
6 were "BRT" (1 done 1T)
5 were "Rapid Bus" ether overlaying or replacing local bus service
1 was "Enhanced"

Pacific Surfliner should be providing bus service during these major closures. I know its a real challenge to hire in dozens of buses but there are ~120 commuter express buses owned by LADOT that only run M-F

This was the timetable plan from last year once valley to valley opened although I expect it’s changed.
Hourly to Bakersfield with a doubling back move to cover Merced and a bi hourly service that skips Merced
I’d like to see both be hourly if not half hourly

ventures fill that hole and not much more. The caltrain equipment will help a little but thats not enough
Hydrogen units are bad, just get 30 5-6 car diesel battery FLIRT XL designed to get OCS gear added down the line for Capital Corridor and the Coast Daylight so more bi levels can move south

Got a LOSSAN TAC meeting on the 2nd

Surfliner was above the states 50% farebox requirement for the June 2024-25 year at 57.7%
Weird to not do this chart as RT
State had so many amtrak cars leased

Some is definitely charging, they’ve struggled to get capacity from PG&E and just finished expanding their Oakland yard to support 130 hydrogen buses which is nearly its entire capacity and now means 1/3 of the fleet can be hydrogen with currently deployed infrastructure

Yep even as they’ve been shown to not be particularly reliable

LA-SD is absolutely not the right corridor to test these sets on and this seems entirely about trying to show off these new trains for the Olympics in 2028
Germany has tried repeatedly and failed to run hydrogen trains in service and has embarrassingly gone back to old equipment, I expect a repeate

There is no need to “innovate” when it comes to zero emissions rail we already have the Gold standard wires with silver being batteries for some use cases
A typical surfliner set of 6 bi levels seats ~550 which is often standing only when busy
Even a doubled up set here will only seat 400-450

Calsta has decided to move the hydrogen flirts south to Pacific Surfliner between LA and San Diego where they will struggle the most
They hold less than half the people with just 2 bathrooms and vending machines replacing cafes.
As a result sets will have to be doubled up increasing their ops cost

its a real study its just been tucked under SR-37 expansion
Feb 2024 update by Caltrans to SR37 Policy Committee
Base level of service is hourly which is sad but I think we can get them to push that to every 30 or every 15

Yes and that makes converting it to rail later a lot harder.

I’d be so embarrassed as VCTC to tell CSUCI students here’s the bus for the fall
Every 80 min bus between a college campus and the 2 transit centers with 0 evening service
(There use to be an extra service running just between the campus and Metrolink on a half hourly or every 40 min timetable)

Do you know what dropped today?
A project update report which is trying to get the funding so we can do SF to at least Bakersfield if not Palmdale by the late 2030s. to do so we need 30-60B or 2-4B a year guaranteed between 2030 and 2045 to borrow against

I strongly disagree, 12tph peak and 6tph off peak should be their 2040 goal.

Amtrak is working on procurement of a new single level long distance fleet but there’s some interesting details
It’s just 2 forms of coaches and cafe car for now which should replace Amfleet II
However the high capacity car is mentioned to run on state routes and the NEC

And yet California even with the high cost example is continuing to plan that a a large part of our passenger routes will be electrified by 2050

What else was caltrans working on in 2006 when '101 in Motion' was created, LOSSAN north strategic plan
A plan to majorly upgrade the coast line north of LA to SLO with projects in Santa Barbra county being a key component.
