You can have cards from multiple libraries stored and most of the larger library systems will give you a card if you live within the suburban area, and if you don't, you can usually get one for a small fee anyway. I use it with the Philly, DC, Chester County PA, and Prince William County VA systems.

As a latchkey kid, mom used to drop me off at the library in the summer. I was practically raised by librarians, and it's why I will always remind people that there's never been an easier time to both get and use a library card. With the Libby app, you can get books and audiobooks on your phone.
