We call for more work on climate damages that cuts **across fields and across methods** – a greater appreciation for each other’s methods, along with recognition of inherent uncertainties.

What kinds of models are best suited for each of these climate damages questions? What does each kind of model ultimately miss?

We describe this as a trilemma.

Fun game: where would you place your papers in our trilemma triangle?

Climate change destabilizes important physical inputs to the economy, creates global systemic risks, and alters the geographic scope of human activity.

What do we know about economic damages from climate change, and **how do we know what we know**?

Our new review paper, "A Guide to Climate Damages," is an attempt at unifying three kinds of papers:

“hot weather lowers corn and soy yields”

with “farmers can alter their crop choice”

and with “there’s a lot of trade in agricultural products”

In his Moving On post, Ari Shapiro talks about keeping the ATC mission posted near his desk.

Here's what I keep posted near my desk.

Thanks, @ari-shapiro.bsky.social, for metaphorically holding my hand every time my research hits a roadblock!

Argument mostly resolved by this super interesting and depressing figure:
doi.org/10.31223/X57...

Clearly we're in a new normal. Open question - do we know yet whether the new normal is more like 2020/21 or more like 2023? I suspect the latter, since Canada is so darn big & it keeps burning. /end

Them: but this paper suggests the Midwest is worse for smoke:

The mystery deepens. Who is right? Smug me, or patient family member? 4/n

Me, smugly: Also hey look, in general my favorite California counties are worse than my favorite Midwestern counties for overall PM, not just PM from wildfires. (Source: www.epa.gov/outdoor-air-...)

But wait there's more 3/n

Me, smugly: Hey look, the West is getting much worse for wildfire smoke. Glad I don't live in California. (Source: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...)

But wait, there's more. 2/n

In middle school math league, I was asked to calculate the angles of a 7-pointed star.

I calculated the angles for a 7/3 heptagram, but the answer key was for a 7/2 heptagram, and I received no credit.

still bitter

Do we know it's not a coal plant?

And if it is, do we like it more or less?
