‪Very happy to share that, as of this week, @ethanvporter.bsky.social and I have taken the reins as co-directors of GW's Institute for Data, Democracy & Politics. You can read the full statement here, ‬https://iddp.gwu.edu/about.

Recent-ish research in political science identified the concept of some people having a "need for chaos," which is also correlated with anti-democratic attitudes. Wouldn't be surprised if this is the case for some of these folks' as well.

I am a Californian transplant to DC and was there for the 2011 earthquake. Can confirm, every word of this is true.

People have been protesting since inauguration at numbers that eclipse what was happening in 2017. The widespread & sustained participation has just been largely ignored by legacy media (I wonder why…), leading many to understandably but incorrectly conclude people’ve been checked out.

Actually, Bezos, journalists’ job is to discern empirical reality & relay it clearly to their audiences. This faux-objectivity & bad faith both-sidesism that’s taken over so much legacy media is just an intellectually lazy, get-out-of-jail-free excuse to sell out journalistic integrity for profits.

So happy to be here! Feeling bull-ish about Bluesky eclipsing Xwitter some day, dare I say sooner than we might expect. (Be advised, however, that I’m an incorrigible optimist.)

Our daughter is not yet 2, but also loves “reading” her Ms. Dolly books. She is a national treasure.
