You're not thick! The hymnwriters used poetic licence. The men are described as magi (wise men), not kings,in Matthew's gospel. Matthew doesn't say how many there were, just that 'wise men' came from the east. The thinking was 'well, as there were 3 gifts, they must have brought 1 each'.
