SPL shared preliminary results of the 2025 patron survey, which included non-users. 98% said that the library improves overall quality of life in Seattle.

NINETY-EIGHT PERCENT. What else could 98% of Seattleites agree on? Baby goats? The Mariners? I doubt it. 98% approval is wild.

The measure would fund police staffing, co-response teams that pair officers with mental health or crisis workers, and improvements to streets and sidewalks, like better lighting. For a home assessed at $596,000, the cost is estimated at about $474 annually with exceptions for certain groups. The total revenue would raise roughly $52 million over six years. Of course, as with all the other historical examples, the minority being discriminated against is never actually being given “the same” rights as everybody else. The Tennessee law explicitly does not treat trans kids “the same” as other kids, nor does it treat both sexes at birth the same, because other kids can take hormones! If you are a “boy” who is too small to play football, you can take testosterone to help you make the tackle. But if you are a “girl” at birth, you cannot take the same medication, even if your reason for doing so is exactly the same.

Many dissidents we spoke to said that, amid prolonged and cascading political crises, establishing a political home for yourself is a necessary ingredient for nurturing non-coöperation. Think of this as the equivalent of participation in a faith community that meets to worship—a regular practice to guard against loneliness and despair, and check in with others going through a similar experience.

In speaking my mind about AI and comedy, I had disagreed with him. And because I am so naive about and unfamiliar with Billionaire Corporate Culture, it didn’t register with me that I was talking to someone who was accustomed to having everyone around him nod and agree with him at all times, to say nothing about laughing at his jokes.*** I have no such people around me so it never occurred to me that a guy like this could have experienced our conversation as a lopsided power imbalance. I mean, there he was, talking to some rando female who, by all definitions, was miles beneath him in measurable status, power and international clout. Yet for some inexplicable reason, the conversation had ended up without him having the last word. And in his sense of how things are meant to work, even the smallest, most utterly insignificant imbalance of power in any exchange, especially one with a complete-non-entity female, needed to be corrected ASAP.
