definitely not helped by the fact that your basic US education does not cover modern korean history At All outside of framing the korean war as “saving south korea from the commies” which means americans have never learned abt why korea was split in the first place or abt us-backed korean dictators

i think like the rise of kpop and the ~korean wave~ means that non-koreans only see korea as this like bastion of a capitalist democracy and they fail to consider what it took for koreans to get to an actual democracy
