I adored the Earthsea books. But the first time I read them our family cat was killed on the road. The second time I read them our second cat suffered the same end - I was a superstitious child and never dared read them again. I’m not sure I’d dare now though still have them over 40 years later!

My only Canada reads up to now - Alice Monro, Lives of Girls and Women. No horror there though - a masterpiece of the mundane

it knocked me out. At around the time I read this, also read Ian McEwan’s The Cement Garden, and will always associate the two with a time in my life
