I got my agent pre-Twitter thanks to the Who You Know factor (the external examiner of my PhD recommended me), which is not something we should particularly aspire to go back to.

The media that I did back then are largely gone: Radio 4's Open Book closed in 2020. Radio 3's Night Waves (later Free Thinking) is down to one night a week and much more topical in focus. AHRC/BBC New Generation Thinkers no longer has an open call but is focused on specific topics. Etc.

There is new legislation currently going through Parliament which would extend right-to-work checks to freelancers but it hasn't actually been passed yet, so I guess this company is just trying to get ahead of the game.

I was at a conference on gun history last month and we were saying that someone needs to write an up-to-date overview bringing together all the new research.

That's one factor but the poster has misunderstood war within Europe, where Christians were certainly not going to war just to defend their country, they were going to war because their king had decided he wanted more territory. Atrocities were part of the picture in Europe too.

Though I do recall about 10 years ago one colleague getting in trouble for comparing management's 5-Year-Plans (yes, really) to the Soviet version in the pages of the Times Higher

So, in theory, this sort of thing is meant to be considered under the new People, Culture and Environment measure, but the pilot results are getting a lot of pushback from institutions who don't want scrutiny of their hiring/submission practices.
