Thought you'd like to see a not-so-hidden horn which I use for the Summoning at our Wassail. I bought it years ago at the British Museum at an exhibition of ice age art.

I hope you replied something along the lines of, "oh, BLESS you, sweetheart".

On reddit they call them hobosexuals.

We've just done our Wassail and did exactly that, with the additional direction: to the pub.

QUITE RIGHT.

I was all fired up to say Master and Commander, but you already did! Someone on the Aubrey/Maturin subreddit had a brilliant idea recently, mapping out a series of TV plots based on blocks of 3-5 of the books, covering various story arcs. Wish it could happen.

The thing about Pogo was that it's highly political, but all the satire is way under the surface. As a kid, we used to read them just for the funny characters and stories and the brilliance of the artwork.

What about the other 39%? Are they don't-knows, not voting or refusing to say?
January 7, 2026 at 8:50 PM
But the same attitude to 'feeeeemales'. 🤮

Maybe they don't earn enough to pay enough tax to cover it. If you giftaid something and you haven't paid enough tax to cover it, HMRC will come after you for the difference.

Don't forget Pogo. I guess most of us are too young to remember him, and I only know him because my parents emigrated briefly to Canada and the US in the early 1950s.

I remember our English teacher (Mr Lawrence Smith) introducing us to this poem, must have been around 1978. I didn't really appreciate it at the time but something must have stuck as it became one of my favourite poems - I always cry at the end.

This is the event that lies behind the movie Mississippi Burning.

Don't forget Miles Kington's wonderful French saying: "To the water! The hour is come!" - or, "à l'eau! C'est l'heure!"

Haha - an old schoolmate of mine worked at Waitrose as a teenager and admitted she did this to horroble people - put their crusty bread through the till and then shoot the tins and bottles down after it to break the crust.

I had to restrain my husband from going up to John Redwood and punching him in the interval at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford upon Avon. It was many years ago.

I would recommend it. There's a ridiculous moment towards the end - kissing in the open street kind of nonsense - but the rest of it is delightful. The performances are excellent.

Discoursing in a restless tone,
Rousing me from sleep—
The finest entertainment known,
And given rag-cheap?

Robert Graves "What Dod I Dream?"
December 29, 2025 at 7:57 PM
What did I dream?
I do not know. The fragments fly like chaff.
Yet, strange, my mind was tickled so
I cannot help but laugh.

Pull the curtains close again,
Tuck my blanket in;
Must a glorious humour wane
Because birds begin

When he says we're on our own, I'm sure he means we've lost any meaningful alliance with the USA. He still doesn't care about Europe.

But then, I haven't read the article - nothing would make me click on a link to the Daily Fail.
December 28, 2025 at 5:47 PM
I've never quite managed to get through WH and this article makes me ponder on the reasons why - it's extremely harrowing and unpleasant. It's one of those books where there's nobody you can sympathise with. I just wanted everyone to go away.
