Love this focus of Credit Unions. Digital when wanted, human when needed. loughcu.ie/credit-union...

Credit unions are member-owned, non-profit financial cooperatives. A 2018 study with older adults showed the move towards digital banking had disempowered those hesitant in the use of digital tools.

In support of @drjessicariddell.bsky.social questioning of violent words we commonly use, I bring you the Apple tree version of hang man. 9 apples (guesses) on the tree and you guess the letter of your word beneath. Celebrating first week back to school.

Very excited to listen to CMAT’s new album (aka Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson). From Dunboyne, Meath, via Blanchardstown, Dublin, she exploded onto the scene in 2022 and is setting the world alight one performance at a time.

Gorgeous book, the atlas of languages. Shares unusual phrases such as the Catalan phrase ‘Tu has begut oli’ (you have drunk oil; aka you’re in soooo much trouble). Points out weird coincidences like Northern Queensland Mbabaram word for dog is ‘dúg’; no relationship to English word. #booksky #eduSky

It may also be due to being the middle of 9 siblings and an innate rejection of being put into any type of box (physical or metaphorical). I’ll leave the final reflection to Kurt… do be do be do indeed. #EduSky

It may seem a trivial distinction, but I find the other too limiting. It is also why I find Celia Whitchurch’s description of the third space professional so compelling as it combines the multiple activities that comprise work that intersects academic and professional roles. #EduSky

Had interesting discussion at EuroSoTL on identities in Higher Ed. While I run a teaching and learning centre, I don’t identify as an educational/ academic / faculty developer. I’m reminded of Stephen Fry saying ‘we are not nouns, we are verbs’. #EduSky @issotl.bsky.social @anda19.bsky.social

The downside of being chatty is I spent the 2 hour journey to Groningen deep in conversation rather than deep in books. No regrets!! Bonnie Mullinix and colleagues have a really practical and insightful book on evaluating ed dev. #EduSky #EuroSoTL

One action I’m taking to make my teaching more accessible is to switch on the auto-caption option in PowerPoint. This enables real-time captioning of a class including discussion. It also can translate from the spoken language to other languages. #EduSky

I use TimeTree collaborative scheduling app/calendar to keep track digitally of our family’s activities. I know it’s an algorithm, but it is always so sweet when it sends a message saying ‘I notice you have a lot on today, mind yourself’.

Chapter pre-print by Barbara Oakley and colleagues on how our brains need deep knowledge to support learning. This has been argued in discovery based learning for quite a while, but very relevant given concerns about AI use and growing digital out sourcing. #EduSky #AI
