A key figure in the Land War, founded the Irish Land League in 1879 to address the plight of tenant farmers, advocating for fair rents, fixity of tenure, and the right to freely sell their occupancy, and later played a crucial role in the Highland Land League.

Michael Davitt, who had suffered the indignation of eviction from his home in Straide County Mayo during the Great Starvation and at the age of eleven was to have his right arm amputated following an accident at a mill. That boy went on to change the course of Irish History.
