Professor @ University of Kentucky. Evolutionary Biologist. Mom. I like sawflies and speciation.
Focusing on the small wins: first data points from this semester’s CURE course! Students are using a PCR assay to ID male sawflies collected on different pines. This is a perfect gel- all positive controls had bands, neg control didn’t, and all 4 unknowns worked. Yay! (W/ @jakebnwatts.bsky.social)

Despite working on pine sawflies for over 20 yrs, I just recently learned (thanks to work by @rdridenbaugh.bsky.social) that the tip of the ovipositor lance (the part that cuts into pine needles) is consistently asymmetric, with a thickened cutting edge. So cool!

First bluesky post: super cool F2 hybrid larvae! We crossed a white-pine specialist (Neodiprion pinetum) to a white-pine avoider (N. lecontei). These F2s hatched on the same day, but some got much bigger, much faster on white pine. Exciting pilot data that makes us want to map all the things!
