I just plugged it back in (I literally only plug it in for audiobooks) and tested "Alexa, play my book", "Alexa, play The Book With No Pictures", and "Alexa, play Brown Bear Brown Bear" and they all worked as expected from the last position I listened at.

I don't remember having to do anything other than initial device setup -- using the phone app to detect it and connect to my Amazon account/wifi.

I got lost in the middle there trying to figure out how much I paid, looks like I might have just snagged a lucky promotion to get one for $7, but camelcamelcamel shows them dipping to $20-30 regularly.

Amazon Echo Dot/Pop, they frequently go on sale for and you can control all the audiobook functions with voice. It's not to everyone's taste but it's by far the cheapest device I own that does Audible.
