6. If Trump is able to make this stick starting Monday, it will have a sudden and devastating effect on universities. In the long run setting a 58% indirect rate or inflating grant budgets could re-equilibrate, if Trump doesn’t destroy NIH entirely. But the short term effects will be massive.

On reflection, some analysis of the Trump NIH funding cuts tonight.

1. The indirect rates are unequal. But they’re not very unequal. Harvard 69%, Wayne State 55%, Texas A&M 54%, Vanderbilt 58%. Some of this variation is justified based on cost-of-living in different places.
