@catalyst.coop
We help #climate advocates, policymakers, & researchers working on the #EnergyTransition by liberating #OpenData about the US energy system using #Python based #DataEngineering

We're also a worker cooperative.

The energy transition continues w/o the US. Insights from a new database (not yet public) tracking more than $200B of Chinese foreign direct investment in low-carbon energy manufacturing. #EnergySky

Also we can finally see *weekends* in our usage metrics, which feels like some kind of milestone. Downloads from our AWS Open Data Registry S3 bucket:

The NREL ATB (electricity) data was also more commonly used than we imagined -- we need to better document that it's all available in PUDL and how to work with it alongside other datasets:

Our sample was only N=47, and it's certainly biased, but we found that we have more for-profit and fewer NGO users than we imagined.

Since our energy data archiving efforts got some coverage a couple of weeks ago traffic on our @datasette.io instance at data.catalyst.coop has increased 50x!

It seems to be a bot that's ignoring our robots.txt. If this is you, all the data is also freely available in an S3 bucket. #EnergySky

Okay the Hub of Git is obvs not Linked of In but c'mon #EnergySky somebody get us over this symbolic threshold. ⭐

Thankfully the flaw Vonnegut mentions isn't universal. We love doing maintenance! However... grant funders & clients don't always share our enthusiasm. So in 2025 we're evolving our open energy data funding model. 🧵 1/n #OpenData #OpenSource #EnergySky

Hi y'all, we're a little all-remote worker co-op that does software and data engineering for folks working on the energy transition, mostly in Python, mostly open source and open data. We play data janitor for EIA, FERC, and other public sources so you (hopefully) don't have to.

A wildly different pattern.

Hey @sevier.io (and other public power advocates) @aripeskoe.bsky.social is looking for examples of arguments in favor of public or cooperative power system ownership. 🔌💡

Digging a little more, it looks like American Energy (the supplier) has also been charging some wild prices to other buyers. As much as $12-14/MMBTU for BIT.

Laboring in the FERC Form 1 bitmines to try and figure out where all the capital that's sunk into existing rate base is hiding. 🔌💡

A webinar on how to use Earthmover's cloud-native platform for working with bulk multi-dimensional weather data. Could be interesting in the context of downscaled weather simulations for renewable energy system planning too? 🔌💡

Poking at some of the interesting discrepancies within the data. Here color varies by BA (though the colors cycle since there are many BAs).

Our member Katie Lamb wrote up a little retrospective of our recently completed CCAI funded project to improve and generalize the record linkage/entity matching process we use to connect the FERC Form 1 and EIA datasets 🔌💡

There are good reasons to expect load growth in the coming decades, but utilities also have every incentive to overestimate it, and historically they certainly have!

RMI suggesting that there's ~250GW of "clean repowering" available in the US. Modest compared to the 1.3TW of projects locked up in the queues, but it's not nothing!
