“Milly, let’s keep the dot-connecting a bit quieter,” Meryl suggested mildly. “Which isn’t to say we don’t want to get to know you,” she added, nodding to Vash. “Wolfwood hasn’t been forthcoming, of course.” “What’s so unclear about private life?” Wolfwood muttered under his breath. Milly was whispering something in Vash’s ear that he didn’t like the look of, especially not when Vash whispered back something that made her beam.

“Y’know, there’s a rumor going around that the base is haunted.” “Haunted?” Vash gasped, folding his hand over his chest. Wolfwood knocked him with his shoulder. “Well, something out there is whistling, and it certainly isn’t the birds. Plus people keep claiming their stuff is moving around. Or going missing.” He nodded to the sturdy work boots and jeans that Vash had acquired sometime between Wolfwood’s Wednesday and Thursday shifts. “Troublesome ghosts,” Vash replied. “Ghosts is one explanation I’ve heard. Other, more rational minds, have better guesses.” “Aliens?” “Wild animals.” Vash let out a throaty scoff. “I wouldn’t say that’s more rational.” “No? You don’t think some feral creature is out there in the night, snatching pants when no one’s looking?” “I snatched one pant. One, singular pair of pants,” Vash protested. “And they look good on me.”
