But in specific reaction to Bush administration policies, more imminent concerns have been voiced, sometimes in ways that have few of any precedents. One of Israel's most prominent intellectuals, Amos Elon, now self-exiled in despair over Israel's social and moral decline, describes the German Jewry of his youth as "the secular elite of Europe.
