David’s from a time they remembered whole foods, even if what they ate was a mere semblance of the real thing. Perhaps in Europe and the Asias it still exists along with their muffled cries for human rights. As for me, I can’t be angry. Anger takes energy, of which I’ve little to spare. Like everyone this side of the Divide, I’m ugly with deformities. Weak with sickness. My broad shoulders hunch, and my spine curves to a hump at the base of my neck. I try to slip into the foyer, quietly, as one might back from the cage of a sleeping tiger. “Tsk. Don’t slink into the shadows like a ghost.” I flush at having been called out so completely. The only choice left is to step proudly into the living room. Maybe he wants to watch me crawl again, but I hold my head high as if I’ve forgotten the whole ordeal. “What do you want?” I ask, uncharacteristically bold. Still reclined, he considers me beneath side-swept bangs, looking me up and down like he’s perusing an item at auction. “Your name.”
