I used to doodle more but now I mostly use stickers for decoration.

Funnily enough, I was just sharing these on a Discord the other day, so I have them at the ready. 😅 These are October monthly things.

#WIPSnips Nov 8: I'm pretty sure I've shared part of this exchange before, but I don't care, it makes me giggle. And it's such a good early establishment of the status quo between Rhiann and Lycus as the story begins.

“I need assurances that this won’t be like the last time—”
“The last ti—” Rhiann’s lungs tightened and her stomach sank. “No.”
“‘It’s just a little singe’ is not something I relish having to explain to the ambassadors. Again.”
“He started it!”
“And you were under direct orders not to finish it.”
Rhiann gave a low, wordless grumble. “If I’d finished it, I’d have finished him.”

Last year I did end up going with Rising Sun, which was the right choice. This year needed a lot of exuberant, cheerful defiance. It aptly reflected

‘This is better,’ she thought, adjusting her footwork. ‘The sitting around with a bottle of mead, that was unnatural.’ She let herself lean on her back leg, as though she’d lost her balance. ‘This…’ Lycus fell for it, moving in too close, allowing her to land a solid roundhouse kick to his side. ‘This is how it’s supposed to be.’ He responded with renewed vigor, a flurry of swift, relentless strikes that Rhiann only just managed to parry. ‘What exists between us is rooted in this: in the anger and the challenge.’
Maybe that was true. But it didn’t stop the rush of arousal that spiked through her when one of Lycus’s hands caught her around the waist, a sudden thrill in her blood that had little to do with the fight.

With extra time before the sun went down, some of the bannermen set up a sparring ring. For a while, Rhiann watched from a distance, musing on the differences in technique not only between Toviran and Requini fighting styles, but from fighter to fighter. In a well-drilled line, they moved in unison, but in a freeform fight, she could see that Korian was prone to feints and that Gerion always fell for them, that Damian favored brute force and used his bulkier frame to his advantage, and that Lycus—
Watching Lycus too closely was a mistake.
He’d stripped off his long-paneled riding coat and heavy outer tunic, despite the chill, leaving his upper half in just his linen under-tunic, which made it far too easy to notice the elegant movements of his back muscles. More than just his body, though, the fascination lay in how he moved: swift yet so precise, with that deliberate control she’d been on the receiving end of in a way that made her shiver to recall.
‘Get a fucking grip, Maera.’ Yet she stayed and kept watching, until eventually the bannermen split off to other duties, and Lycus fixed his gaze on her.

“I don’t know anything about Talsyran magic.”
“No one does.” A spark lit in his pale eyes, part mischief, part eagerness. “Wouldn’t it be a grand thing, to be the first person in living memory—the first person in centuries—to master it?”
A flicker of interest twitched somewhere deep inside her, but she summoned an indifferent shrug. “For someone else, maybe. Some Coriolese scholar.”
“Ah, like dear Sorceren Orennis, you imply?” He folded his arms, the journal tucked neatly against his side. “No doubt she would revel in the opportunity—but would she deserve it? Would any of the scions of Coriol, whose interest in magic is so bloodless, so detached?”

Spanberger took Nelson County -- where I'm intending to move soon, and which has historically been quite red. And that's honestly been a hesitation for me in moving there.

She didn't take it by a ton. But she took it.

YESSSSSSSSSS the Commonwealth of Virginia has its first female governor with Abigail Spanberger AND its first Muslim woman in statewide office with Ghazala Hashmi!!!

“If by that, you mean he managed to cling to power even when the Lijari—”
“No. Not precisely that.” Elusine’s brow creased in thought. “Not all Requini officers, even faced with that shape of political circumstances, would have been able to make nice with Tovira and Coriol.” Rhiann snorted, and Elusine’s eyes narrowed. “You dismiss his efforts too readily, Maera. I’ve met enough other Requini officials to be grateful he’s the one we’ve had sitting on the other side of the Marchen border all this time, and not only because he’s the demon we know. He’s helped us when he didn’t have to—”
“Only when he could see advantage in it,” Rhiann countered. “Advantage like cozening you into believing him a better man than he is.”

#WIPSnips Oct 30: For all the magic in this book, I actually avoid this word except in very particular circumstances. Each cultural iteration of magical practice has its own terminology, and "spell" isn't one of Tovira's, which we spend the most time with.

“We are aware of the bluntness of the preferences of the Lijari,” the stranger replied. “And of the preferences of each of your peoples. We have learned, from what we have observed. In Aržys. In Nälren. In Karsen.” Lijari strongholds. “In Linetra. In Amberhost. In Maissen.” Coriolese cities, all. “In Vallasca. In Caerwich. In Aylesburh.” Rhiann was not the only Toviran to bristle.
On she went, naming cities in every nation with representatives present. It sounded like a chant—like a spell, even, as though to invoke the names of these places was to invoke power over them. Rhiann didn’t like it.
