Finally, the Habs don't have infinite prospect depth. If the Habs trade out one of their few remaining higher end center or defensive prospects for another winger it could mean that they won't have enough to trade for a C when the opportinity arises.

Annoyingly, many fans seem to think that Matheson, Laine and a 2nd will get it done. The Blues aren't stupid - it is likely to cost the Habs at least a good roster player and someone like Reinbacher and/or Hage. Can you come up with a plausible trade that doesn't hurt my soul?

Absolutely. The Caps seem like their ideal opponent for several reasons. Winning is improbable (and playing Tom Wilson for 4-7 games is not ideal), but it would be infinitely preferable compared to losing to the Leafs.
