Maybe because it's a more philosophical dispute than previous civil rights fights? People went surprisingly nuts over Pluto not being a planet, and that didn't even have political valence.

Did you ever read Cusp by Robert Metzger? I don't know if I would say it's *good* overall in a literary sense, but the density of ideas and the way he keeps topping himself is entertainingly bonkers. I thought it was worth the read.

This is also why complaints that Westeros isn't as religious as a medieval European-esque society should be don't make sense. A few centuries back, half-alien Atlanteans conquered it, killed the pope, installed their chosen pope and have been publicly fucking their sisters ever since.

This is just the China Brain argument from absurdity, isn't it?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_b...

It's basically an emotional argument and as a kid I read too much sci fi in which weird things turn out to be conscious (forests, planets, etc.) for it to bother me.

Wasn't there a study (with good causal inference) that showed that attending college even made mobsters better at being mobsters?

Keeping the Douthat types around means that it's a coin flip whether the rage-y headline will be an accurate representation of the article or the opposite, so the readers can never screen their clicks the way they might want to.

In a 30 Rock-esque twist, that quote is apparently not from 30 Rock but from its real-life porn parody (not its in-show porn parody).

The horror of Trump foreign policy is that his beliefs are basically identical to Jacobin-y conspiracy theories but he wants to be one of the conspirators.

If they wanted another friendly regime in the region they could have just offered some sort of deal to Saddam. He was a corrupt dictator, they're easy and cheap to deal with.

I've liked some Doctorow, but it always seems to be either "this utopia is basically Burning Man" or "this is a dystopia because it's the anti-Burning Man."

And for some reason his sex scenes are like nails on a chalkboard to me.

30 Rock had a joke about this when Tracy sees a white judge on Law and Order and foretells the return of old-school racism.

Stross's "A Colder War" is really most appropriate to the moment, since it imagines a US government that's trying to contain the horrors but is failing in real time due to Ollie North cowboy shit.
