Did you ever read Cusp by Robert Metzger? I don't know if I would say it's *good* overall in a literary sense, but the density of ideas and the way he keeps topping himself is entertainingly bonkers. I thought it was worth the read.

If they wanted another friendly regime in the region they could have just offered some sort of deal to Saddam. He was a corrupt dictator, they're easy and cheap to deal with.

I've liked some Doctorow, but it always seems to be either "this utopia is basically Burning Man" or "this is a dystopia because it's the anti-Burning Man."
