It’s an English phrase from the 15th century. We can blame Americans for a lot, but there is nothing more euphemistic than our own English language. It’s used commonly in the States. It doesn’t bother me all that much, to be honest, especially in the context of offering condolences. Whatever helps.

Not just wise, in the sense of kind, supportive and generous to others, but wise in the sense of whip smart.

Why can’t it be both? The article is written by a university chair of global public health, pretty sure he knows his stuff.
