We stand just in front of, and almost directly under, a huge electricity pylon, the sort that carries power from where its generated to entire regions. Not only can we see the steel beams that are shaped together to form the pylon itself, we can also clearly see the wires that carry the power, and lower barbed wire designed to protect the tempting sculpture from being climbed by adventurous fools. The day is overcast and the clouds appear to roil above is. The photo is black and white; we can only see the tower because its beams are black against the dark grey sky.

This person isn't worth getting too involved with, they've missed my point entirely.

But I'll repeat that this analysis is not about me being good or moral. It's me wanting freedom for those of us who are marginalised in the rich world, AND those people who get bombed by the rich world.

This post has been floating around. I'm not here to merely dunk, but it needs a serious response.

I think the attitude of "What matters is the rights of the marginalised in the Imperial core" shows a huge lack of understanding of the lives of people outside the core....
A post from Bluesky, with identifying information cropped out. The core of the post is a meme showing two strategic bombers. One, captioned "Republicans" is bombing an unseen target below. The second, captioned "Democrats", is the same picture, except the bomber has a Pride rainbow flag on its tail, and "Black Lives Matter" and "Yes She Can" are painted along the fuselage. The post itself says "I hate this sort of meme.". It quotes a hypothetical speaker saying "The only difference between the parties is whether the power to destroy human civilization rests in the hands of leaders who think gays, women and black people should have their rights acknowledged". It goes on to respond "Even if true, how is Rainbow B-52 not infinitely preferable?"

Juddering
We are looking at the face and head of a white woman. The colours have been altered so her skin is aqua-blue, with some purple patches. The background is red and black. The colours shine like a translucent oil slick. Her face is duplicated six or seven times, growing more transparent each time, as each version of it moves diagonally downwards, to her right. I wonder how it feels?

On an inner-suburban street stands a red-brick building, one half of which has been covered in drab greyish paint. On the red-brick side, a sign near the roof reads "The Yarra Coffee Palace 1914". The upper storey has two modern metal windows, while the bottom has four, with two doors. Although the building was obviously once meant to provide access to the public from the street, the downstairs windows are covered to give privacy to people living inside, and the doors do not invite random visitors. Old faded painted advertisements for Capstan cigarettes and Temple Bar tobacco are on the side wall of the red-brick section.

We are standing right next to a huge stack of refrigerated shipping containers. The stack is at least six containers high, and over twenty long, just in our view. The white containers with black and yellow markings, and blue compressor units, form a wall we cannot even hope to see over.

We are at a public event where people may walk through the brand new West Gate tunnel. On a service road looping under the main road that runs into the tunnel. we can see the accompanying veloway. It crosses the nearby Maribyrnong River and curves past an industrial park containing hundreds of shipping crates, as it heads to Docklands, next to Melbourne's central business district. The outside wall of the veloway is decorated in lozenge-shaped, brightly-coloured patterns, of pink, green, yellow, grey, blue, and orange.

We are standing next to a smoke stack that lets dirty air out of the new West Gate Tunnel. Its long front stretches past us, and rises into an oval-shaped top. It is covered in white, triangular panels and it looks like a giant sneaker that would be endorsed by a famous NBA basketballer in the USA.

Hi everyone. I have some big personal news.

This year I have been deeply considering my gender. After being sure of what I want for months, yesterday I saw an endocrinologist and got a prescription for estrogel.

So I am transitioning to female, and my name is now Caspia. I use she/her pronouns now

A huge concrete chimney, part of a now-disused power station rises high into the air. It is behind a cyclone fence topped with razor wire, and framed by two gum trees. The photo has a cross-processing effect, which adds a cream tinge to the white clouds and grey chimney, and a slight green to the blue sky

It is a cloudy afternoon. We are on a concrete path, running between some waste ground fenced off with cyclone wire, and a nature strip with trees and grass separating us from a suburban back street. Just above us, an Australian magpie flies towards the fence. They have been captured with their wings open wide. The feathers on the end of their wings are spread out so we can clearly see each individual one, and so are their tail-feathers. The bird is mostly black, with white curves running from the base of the wing to the leading edge. The part of the tail closest to the body is white too, as is a small marking on the back of their neck. The bird's grace and power are on full display.

Duck meat and cracked black pepper on light rye sourdough
On a blue, white and yellow crockery plate decorated in a geometric Moroccan pattern inspired by flowers and feathers are two slices of light rye sourdough bread spread with butter. On top of the butter on each slice are small pieces of cooked duck cut from a whole bird, with the skin and fat easily visible. On top of the duck is sprinkled some freshly-cracked black pepper.

We are in front of a high grey concrete wall that blocks off at least two thirds of our view. Above it, the pillar and base of an elevated highway block off another fifth of it. In the gap between them, we can see blue sky and the top two floors of a large modernist redbrick, sawtooth-roofed warehouse. Just under the roof line the words "Victorian Producers Co-Operative Co. Ltd. are painted, in black on a white background. In two other places the words "No 5 Store" are painted in the same colours.

It's a gloomy day; the sky is almost completely overcast. We are near the bank of a largish river and directly in front of us is a huge electricity pylon. It is silhouetted in front of the clouds and we can see how engineers design it with the strength of steel triangles. Electric transmission wires, at least six pairs of them, are attached to its top, heading away in two different directions. There are some trees near its right-hand legs. Arising behind them, like a tiny cigarette stuck in a sandy flowerpot to extinguish its heat, is the actually-enormous chimney of the Newport Power Station, made artificially small by the phone's tiny lens.

Today's Breakfast
[food] On the photographer's kitchen bench are three pieces of crockery. The first, a blue, white and yellow plate decorated in a Moroccan style of geometric patterns apparently inspired by feathers and flowers has two pieces of light rye sourdough toast on it. One piece is topped with three narrow slices of fried halloumi, and the other has slices of jammy soft-boiled egg on top. Each one has salt and cracked black pepper as well. The second piece is a bowl in aqua and white, containing porridge, honey and banana slices. And lastly, a double-walled coffee glass contains a latte decorated on top with a simple fern-like piece of latte art.

On the concrete ground mere feet from the bank of a wide, still river is a sculpture that looks a little like the anthropomorphic desk light used as a mascot by Pixar. It is made of steel, copper, bronze and brass, with most of its main "body" being steel. There is a steel base attached to the ground, which has a short "leg" shaped like a snub-nosed bullet. Attached to the semi-spherical tip of the bullet are two curved limbs. One arches upwards for about a metre and a half, looking somewhat like a human back. This limb has four metallic ribs, three near the bottom and one near the top. Another is short and stubby, still curved but not gracefully so. The stubby limb is attached to a steel cylinder with a short crosspiece at the end, parallel to the ground, and at the end of that is a bronze sphere with a semi-transparent eyepiece. The end of the crosspiece appears to be broken off, as a close look reveals interior machinery.Now we return to the top of the "back". Attached to that is an ominous cylinder, which leans perhaps twenty degrees from the vertical. Its lower end points at the bronze sphere, and it is finished off with a black knob that looks like it might be the business end of a death ray. On the upper end of the ominous cylinder is another sphere, which is partly covered by a copper half-dome, attached to the back by thin struts, looking like an umbrella or the cover of a lamp. Beyond the sculpture we see a footbridge across the river, with suspension arches that create a curve like the cover of a baby's pram.

We are looking west, into the beginnings of sunset in a partly cloudy spring sky. Two train tracks converge into a single track; they are the tracks of the Westona passing loop finishing off as suburban Melbourne passenger trains run to Laverton. One of those trains heads there to finish its Laverton line run; soon it will head back to us.

And THIS. This is Emily Johnson. She will cut you down with her katana that never misses. In the unlikely event you're too far away, she'll shoot you with her Arashi. Her armour is from the skin of a defeated monster snake, and it scares the fuck out of any lesser snake-enemies.

We are on a concrete bike and walking trail under a nineteenth-century bridge. The bridge, crossing a small creek in a fairly deep valley, is made of bluestone piers with red brick work arches. It is a bright sunny day, and the water of the creek is partially reflected in an arched shape near the far end of the bridge.
