The latest evaluation of bike lane projects in Boston continues to show that if you build bike infrastructure, people will use it.

Bicycle counts significantly increased on every corridor where we completed Better Bike Lanes projects in 2024. The number of people biking, and the percentage of all traffic they make up, both saw substantial increases. ▸ We counted over 3,000 more daily bike trips, a 55% increase across all projects. In our prior report on Better Bike Lane projects completed in 2023, we recorded a 44% increase in volume. The latest projects appear to have tapped into even more growth potential by focusing on mostly arterial streets and closing key new network connection gaps. ▸ Bicycles as a share of of all traffic increased to 7% of daily traffic across all projects, nearly doubling from 4% in the baseline condition. Some projects saw bicycle mode share as high as 19% ▸ Boylston Street (Back Bay) topped the list with a near doubling (+83%) of daily bike trips, leading four other corridors that measured growth of nearly 50% or more.

Awful tragedy someone was majorly injured by an unsafely fast e-bike at Dartmouth & Huntington/St. James. The absolute nerve of “Pedal Safe Boston” disingenuously commenting after Jay Cashman & PSB froze the Dartmouth safety project that planned to address that intersection!

Ryan Meehan of Peddle Safe Boston, a bike, pedestrian, and motorist advocacy group, says he’s working with local leaders on the city and state level to change that. “They’re going 25-35 miles and hour. You can’t get a car going this tree 25-30 miles and hour. So, why are they unregistered? Why are they uninsured?” Meehan said.

After Cashman learned last summer that a bike lane would be installed in front of his mansion on Dartmouth Street, he had a team of researchers examine the city’s bike network and concluded that the existing lanes were “improperly built” and that the city did not have a master plan guiding construction. Earlier this year, Cashman launched an organization called Pedal Safe Boston, which urged the mayor in a letter to “halt all ongoing and planned bike construction” until a master plan is in place. “It’s a bad situation,” Cashman recalled telling the mayor in a phone call in January. “You’re going to do something about this.”
