BUT I also do not approve of AI use in this manner, and bypassing public use of energy solely for corporate exclusivity doesn't sit right with me :(

I think it's a partnership, Microsoft won't be in charge of the plant they just pay to get the energy. The NRC and WANO will be very involved in oversight as they are for all nuclear plants in the US, as well as following all Codes of Federal Regulations to maintain licenses of reactors!
