In 2021, a Cessna Caravan operating in Alaska encountered severe icing, spun towards the ground, and came within moments of crashing. That accident and the Bering Air accident have similarities that cannot be overlooked.

It has been 16 years (Colgan 3407) since a US-based airliner had a major accident, the longest streak in aviation history. Tonight, that streak ended with AA 5342.

The weather conditions, while relevant to the flight and approach, did not cause the accident, only the missed approach. What is unclear is why, the aircraft slowly and then suddenly descended.

The FDR doesn't capture data from many instruments - like weather radar. None of that data is broadcast in real-time, nor is it archived.

Think of that massive tranche of data that could automate PIREPs and give real-time weather reports to all aircraft.
