For the first time in decades, the Coalition has lost its perceived advantage on economic management, the Australian Election Study has found.

It shows the challenge ahead for the Liberals, who now need to regain their traditional strengths

Counting still underway but former KAP MP Nick Dametto has romped home in the election for Townsville mayor, with nearly 62% of the first preference vote on the current count. His replacement in state parliament will be chosen in a fortnight #qldpol

Seven candidates have nominated for the Queensland state seat of Hinchinbrook, with election day set for November 29. Full guide on the ABC News website coming soon

the government now seems to be saying that Senators wouldn't need permission to use the bathroom under its proposed new standing order, but that's not what the motion on the notice paper says, unless they plan to amend it
November 4, 2025 at 1:15 AM
I'd be surprised if Marielle Smith's motion passes, but... if such a rule were to be agreed, is it genuinely enforceable? I am not a lawyer but this feels vaguely kidnapping-adjacent? Would Black Rod have to prevent senators from walking out one of the chambers many doors?

loving this suggestion to remove the donkey vote advantage by printing ballots on round paper with a centre hole, and installing spindles into ballot booths to "facilitate spinning if needed". i suspect it will be deemed logistically impractical, but it would certainly make voting more whimsical

This is interesting: someone has told the parliamentary inquiry looking at the last federal election that they worked as a contractor for a party or a candidate and was paid for doorknocking, phone polling, and working outside pre-poll voting centres

The Paris Agreement requires Australia (and all countries) to submit nationally determined contributions (NDCs) every 5 years, that each should be an improvement on the previous and reflect the “highest possible ambition”

Does pegging the target to the OECD average satisfy that?

i do want this o'bahn schematic diagram as a full sized poster though

all the pictures on the O'Bahn wikipedia page appear to be upwards of two decades old. Adelaide deserves better than this.

Per YouGov (and @dropout.tv), Kamala Harris won the hotel toiletry thief demographic 45-43.

Trump won 49-39 among Americans who never take unused toiletries from hotels

... but there are more independents in the 'ungrouped' column and more independents in multi-candidate groups (like the Peter George group)

More than a quarter of all candidates are independents, a big jump on last year.
June 30, 2025 at 1:58 AM
There are 161 candidates in Tasmania, slightly down on last year, but there's been a big drop in the number of ballot columns across the state, and a big jump in the number of independent candidates.

That'll make for simpler ballots for most voters...

#breaking A Tasmanian state election will be held on July 19.

Statement from the Governor:

Here's the full statement from Government House:

This is the error in Tasmania's supply bill that delayed passage and means the Premier is visiting the Governor after sunset.

That "28,862" should've been "26,862", a $2 million typo #politas

I've been playing with sankey charts to see how seats in the lower house have been changing over time.

It's interesting to see the double defeat of the Coalition over two cycles and how big a mountain it is for them to return to power caseybriggs.substack.com/p/australias...

We wanted to better understand how elections are won in Australia, how swing voters are changing, and how the tectonic plates of politics are shifting in this country

So here's something we've been working on.

Swingers: How To Win An Election.

imo you don't get to make up lies in press releases no matter what the date is, so I trust the press gallery will hold The Greens accountable for this policy position in the next parliament
March 31, 2025 at 11:04 PM
ok but what does this have to do with the budget??
March 25, 2025 at 8:46 AM
more than half the vote still to be reported but the combined major party primary vote in Werribee (outer western Melbourne) is currently about 56%.

Crowded field of candidates contributes a little to that, but still: woof.
