Happy upcoming Pioneer Award Application Day to all who celebrate. I was mentioning that the best review comment I've ever gotten came from the related DP2 (New Innovator) mechanism. Enjoy this throwback to #GrantReviewGreatstHits as the deadline gets closer! May you all do better than I've done!

🍪🧪🎨 I tried to emerge victorious from today's departmental cookie competition with an entry that was art, science, and cuisine, but it was not to be. I'm sad to say Betteridge's Law does NOT apply to cookie titles.

We now live in an age where one has to explain that you used to have to go to a store to get new music recordings.

Y'all, I have bad news. This is an exhibit in a museum explaining what a record store is. We... we are old!

I said some other things at this #USUKForum, but in case you're wondering how I feel about the "data are the new oil", I wanted to make it unambiguous from the title.

I had the chance to share some thoughts at the #USUKForum, and I spent a few minutes highlighting the importance of well-considered funder policies to drive progress.

We noticed that some DTC dog breed tests required a photo. We designed a study to examine whether or not the photo influenced the test result.

You can read a summary of our findings here (& the study is linked from this piece): https://news.cuanschutz.edu/dbmi/how-trustworthy-is-your-dogs-dna-test

Breed tests aren't just for fun - test results can have many consequences, so it's important that companies are approaching this with technical rigor.

This table summarizes the results for six "genetic" tests + one neural network that predicts dog breed.

What happens when you take a dog breed test, which lets you upload pictures, and send a sample of a bulldog with a picture of a labrador retriever? We asked this for six tests, and the results were intriguing.

I started using StableDiffusion to generate coloring pages, and there are some near misses. This is "A cupcake riding a unicorn as black and white line art for a coloring book on a mostly white background."
