Discussed in Cinefex 110! Seems the spray was real, from a missed mark mid-long-take, and they felt their best option was to carry it forward into the subsequent shot splices while also trying to mix it back off over time. You can debate that call, but interesting insight into the circumstances!
The complex choreography - in and out of the bus, then across the battlefield in one take - was further complicated when a pyrotechnic squib exploded fake blood across the camera lens. "It was completely accidental," recalled Churchill. "A fugee extra in the bus was off her mark. She turned to camera and splashed the lens. We continued with the take because daylight was fading fast, and there were so many elements going on it was impossible to communicate the 'cut' to everybody." After rapid evaluation of the problem on set, Churchill worked with Double Negative to incorporate the blood splash into the scene through a transition into the Pierrepoint building. "The shot continued from Upper Heyford into a studio interior; so we not only had to remove the blood - which was much more than is visible in the film - we had to add blood to make it bridge the transition. 2D artist Niki Wakefield spent a lot of time removing and replacing blood so we could believably animate the drops to thin and roll away as the camera moved around.”
