I’ve fostered many litters of newborn puppies but it is truly so magical everytime. The growth and development and getting to witness every small milestone. Feeling so lucky and so excited to see who these pups turn into and what lucky people get to bring them home.

a few of the pups are responding to sounds this morning! I was unreasonably excited to see their heads lift and little ears twitching when I was speaking to them 🥹

Eclipse was the last of his litter to open his eyes all the way and his look of disgust is pretty much all of us wrapping up the 2025 dumpster fire

The hallowed hounds are 17 days old today! Their eyes are fully open but as of right now their ears are still sealed. Any day (or really any moment!) they’ll start reacting to sounds

this puppy pile formation is a work of art 🤌 it looks like Hex was trying to crawl over Tarot and got tired halfway through so he just passed out. Nyx & Eclipse touching noses is so cute too!

Eclipse’s eyes are fully open which means the existential crisis stage is upon us. The puppies will have lots of new sensory input and deep thoughts about the meaning of life over the next week or so.

look at them go 💪 they're able to get their legs under them and push their whole body off the ground to take some wobbly steps. This is a two week milestone!
they don't interact with each other much beyond seeking out the puppy pile but soon they'll start engaging with their environment more!

Did yall know that dog’s go through postpartum hair loss just like humans do? They have similar hormone changes during & after pregnancy, & share a lot of experiences humans do, anxiety too! Salem has been shedding more than usual the last couple days, feeding babies is taking a lot of energy!

Mama Salem had a special visitor today - her original foster fam! They thought they were pulling a senior dog from the shelter, but a routine wellness exam turned into an episode of Maury when the vet revealed Salem was pregnant (and young) 😂 i took over from there!

right on cue the puppies are starting to open their eyes! A couple of them had the inner corners beginning to open this morning, & by this afternoon a bit more of their eyes have opened. The 3 chunky pups are starting to open but the runt is a bit behind which is to be expected. All in due time!

checking in on mama Salem & her little babies in the night has the funny side effect of greatly irritating my resident cat, Violet. The interruption to peak cat shenanigan time is a grave offense.

an easy way to tell if puppies are getting what they need from their mom is simply paying attention to how much they’re crying. Quiet puppies are content puppies & this lil mama is taking amazing care of her babies! They’re clean, have full bellies, and spend a lot of time being snuggled up to her.

a mom’s maternal behavior directly influences puppies’ cognitive development, even in the neonatal period (days 1-16)! the amount of time she spends with them, licks them, directs them, etc shapes the way they manage stress, thermoregulate, & grow. It’s fascinating to watch it all happen!

activated sleep! When puppies twitch in their sleep, they're not dreaming. Their brain is developing rapidly & sending signals to their muscles. they develop muscle tone while sleeping 90% of the day. A lot happens in a puppy's first 2 weeks of life, though it seems like all they do is sleep and eat

I just got back in bed after mama Salem’s nighttime check in / potty break & it is so cold outside! The pups were piled up & mama was snuggling them. so warm & cozy! 330am makes everything more ethereal but I swear i can feel the magic, amplified by how cold it is outside. puppies are so special.
