I feel like “SWEET JOE PYE WEED!” would make an excellent expletive.

Like the kind of thing you could say when you hurt yourself within earshot of your grandmother

It’s a biennial. When it blooms in its second year, it’s easy to spot. But our friend Knapweed Nightmare can find it during its first year, when it’s just a little rosette ... 🌹

Today I learned about a German shepherd called Knapweed Nightmare, the first dog trained to sniff out the invasive plant spotted knapweed 🤩

The @chicagomanual.bsky.social 18 cameos continue!

Look look, it’s my colleague Susie Allen, whose @uchicagomag.bsky.social article “Eyes on the story” is given as an example in 14.87: BASIC CITATION FORMAT FOR MAGAZINE ARTICLES

“Chicago police department out in force protecting Tesla dealership“
www.reddit.com/r/millenials...

Seriously?

Shouldn’t Elon be hiring his own private security guards, rather than relying on police officers that our tax dollars pay for?

A colleague was consulting the “Academic titles” section of @chicagomanual.bsky.social and came across quite a few familiar names

Earlier this week I met a friend at Jimmy’s for lunch. Just behind me, someone was washing the windows in six-degree weather. 🥶

It was Matt Martell, AB’95.

I guess when you’re the owner, no job is too big or too small.

A year ago I stayed for a week at the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I was able to borrow the exact books I needed from this beautiful library.

The Eureka Springs Carnegie Public Library is a jewel, #Arkansas.

As are the rest of your state’s libraries.

Still learning new things at the University of Chicago:

*Donning* and *doffing* are OPPOSITES.

You don’t just don your gay apparel.
You don’t just doff your cap.
You can also don and doff PPE.

Ok, I have an answer, thank you @storybilder.com!

It was particularly striking because it was one of the first pages of DIRTY WORKS: Obscenity on Trial in
America’s First Sexual Revolution, by Brett Gary.

In this context it read like a political statement.

Why do books have pages that are “intentionally left blank”?

Why not just *leave* the page blank?

Or *write something* on it?

Can someone in publishing please explain why this is a thing?

It is 0 degrees in Chicago and a cabbage white has mysteriously appeared in my kitchen.

It thinks the light above the sink is the moon.

My cat is about to lose her tiny mind.

I saw this book in the Boulder Public Library a few months ago and was curious to read it.

I could buy it ... but why not ask the Chicago Public Library to buy it for all of us?

Santa exists! But he only brings books. And you have to share.

Hear me out:

I really want to hear Chappell Roan’s “Femininomenon” played on UChicago’s carillon.

“Femininomenon” on the carillon-omenon. Right?

I made a request for Friday, Jan. 24.

Back me up?

Today I learned from @uchicagomag.bsky.social’s amazing fact checker that there is NO HYPHEN in “Burton Judson,” as per the Housing Office.

How am I supposed to remember this after [...] years ???

One last thing and then I’m done gushing about the OCLS Writers Conference.
ocls.org/ocls-writers...

1 - It’s free.
2 - It’s online and open to everyone.
3 - It’s in JANUARY. Just in time for a few late-breaking New Year’s resolutions.

I have never even been to Orange County.
But thank you!

Next session at the OCLS Writers Conference: @kristenstieffel.bsky.social’s session Edit Like a Pro, where she laid out an incredibly detailed, layered way of editing your own manuscript.

You’re supposed to do all this *before* you share it with beta readers … um

My first question for Mark Bouman: “Where IS the Calumet, exactly?”

I got a very long answer in response, in which I learned the term “vernacular region.“
