Dad brought this tradition with him when he and Mum got together, and we've kept it up ever since. We still get each other a small gift on our 'name day', like a special chocolate.
Thing is: we've all left the Catholic Church, actually. We just keep this going as a family thing, no saints attached.

One of my favourite family traditions - we still congratulate each other on our "name day". Austrian children used to be assigned a patron saint when they were born, and when my dad was a boy, the day that Saint is commemorated, your "name day", was a bigger deal than even your birthday.
