These dimensions allow the mapping of various resource discrepancies: High power, upper class (self-dependence/high control); Socioeconomic status, prestige (other-dependence/high control); Scarcity, low status (self-dependence/low control); Low power, low class (other-dependence/low control). This mapping allows identifying why and when various resource discrepancies can produce both converging and diverging findings.

These dimensions create four forms of scarcity: Incidental (low intensity and duration), conditional (low intensity/high duration), episodic (high intensity/low duration), and chronic (high intensity and duration). The center of the figure highlights factors that impacts these forms of scarcity: availability of and access to resources, resource slack, and sensitivity to resource shocks.

There are two routes through which consumers attempt to cope with resource scarcity: 1) Scarcity-reduction. When consumers believe they can change the situation (high mutability), they invest efforts to acquire and/or save the scarce resource. 2) Control-reduction. When consumers believe they cannot change the situation (low mutability), they attempt to restore their sense of control and/or security.
