Our homes are a key part of our experience of ageing, they determine the extent to which we can live independently, safely and well in our communities.

As our days get colder, its crucial to recognise that more older people are at risk of health issues from cold homes. 60% of excessively cold homes are occupied by at least one person over the age of 55.16. This is unacceptable.

Today our Chief Executive, @caroleeaston.bsky.social, gave evidence to the Health and Social Care Committee on physical activity in an ageing society.

She highlighted the urgent need for a Commissioner for Older People and Ageing to address the huge gap in national policymaking around ageing.

Falls are the biggest causes of accidents in the home and place huge pressures on health services.

"What I'm asking of employers is to be open-minded. Have an approach of being person-centred from a social model, not just about performance and competence. It needs to be more than that, more humanised way of working. Otherwise we'll become a society who's ostracised all your older Disabled people"

Since July 2022, over 375,000 new homes have been built without meeting accessible or adaptable standards.

For disabled and older people with changing mobility, this isn't just about housing — it's about basic rights, health and independence.
